In the early sixties, few children had any opportunity of travelling abroad.
The first cruise set-off for Venice (by train from Victoria station) on 2nd April, 1963 - a party of 400 children and adults. The former B.I. troop-ship, SS Dunera, lay at the mouth of the Grand Canal, looking large and powerful as the children climbed aboard. Educational Cruising had begun.
Forty years on, the adventure continues, in our case under the current Logo of ISAC (Independent Schools Adventure Cruises) - formerly IAPS Educational Cruises Ltd, thanks to the vision of Victor Haggard and others, with the firm support of BI Steam Navigation Company, P & O, and more recently Voyages of Discovery.
Belief in the value of first-hand observation is confirmed by the students of today who, accompanied by experts in various subjects, find their interests stimulated at a formative stage of their education. The ship becomes a floating home/school as it transports some 500 youngsters aged 10 to 16 with their leaders around the Eastern Mediterranean.
ISAC usually take about 200 children on each cruise. Over the last 7 years through our scholarship scheme, we have awarded 72 scholarships and exhibitions and 25 bursaries.
